An excerpt from “Origin” by Raleigh Dugal:

Looking at Murray rooted in the middle of the pavement made Ezra uncomfortable. He wore an awkward look on his face, as if he were feigning worry, like this was no big deal, but since it was no big deal to him it wouldn’t be a big deal to anybody else, so he had to have a dangerous attitude. Ezra swore he could see Murray’s calves twitch beneath his denim pant legs.

“Not yet,” Ezra said.

“I know,” Murray hissed. The branches along the edge of the road were rustling in the breeze, but the sound of motor in the approaching vehicle drowned them out.

Raleigh Dugal is a former teacher, lifeguard, private investigator, and roller-skating DJ. He has fished for blue sharks off the coast of Nantucket, appeared on reality court television (and won), and has driven from Sacramento to Rhode Island in forty-five hours. From March to late August he practices the religion of pickup basketball. In September he converts to flag football. In 2003 he earned a B.A. in English Literature from Umass Dartmouth, and in 2008 completed his M.A. in Professional Writing. Raleigh finds inspiration in the stories of Ernest Hemingway, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Flannery O’Connor. His fiction has been published in Temper and Encounters Magazine. He is intrigued by the places in reality where the truly strange is allowed, and inevitable, to happen: mall parking lots at three AM, public restrooms, and walks home from the bus stop. He currently lives in Massachusetts and is writing his second novel.
