“He twisted his head to search for the bag. There it was, just out of reach on the front seat. He wiggled his hips and edged closer to it. He groaned and his fingers reached nearer, but the clown face on the bag seemed to taunt him. He strained to break free of the hold placed on his chest. He blew all the air out of his lungs and moved an inch or two to the right. At last, his hand extended and one finger scratched at the paper. The bag moved. His chest heaved and grunting sounds filled the car. It was the hardest work he had done since breaking rocks at the state pen at Huntsville. Fingers drew the bag to his body. They gripped it and he was able to hold the bag up to his face in less than a minute.”

Bob Clark
has been writing since first grade, but he started writing for pay when he became a radio personality and turned out hundreds of thousands of thirty and sixty-second commercial announcements. Many of those were tiny stories whose duty was to sell a service or a product. He has lived and worked in places ranging from the New York area to Oregon, from Indiana to Florida and in Mexico and Puerto Rico. After nearly 5 decades of slaving away behind microphones and cameras as a DJ, voice over announcer, talk show host, and TV news anchor, he retired to a more sanity filled life near the beach in Corpus Christi, Texas. There, he began to write short stories, novels and a memoir of his life in the sordid underbelly of the Mexican border. His short stories have been published in two anthologies of stories to be read aloud in competitions in high schools. All of them take place in the strange country called South Texas.
I have known this guy since he was born. Love the twists in his stories.
This looks interesting. I would like to read more.
I can’t wait to read the rest. Great interview!
Very interesting and intriging work.
Looking forward to reading more. I love all of Bob’s stories and this looks like one of his best.
Keep writing, Bob. You’re on a roll!
Bob is a very good story teller and I will try to read them
all. Loved the interview.
Bob was kind enough to send me several of his stories in the course of the past two or three years. I have been teaching German and English literature for more than 30 years, so I think I know a well-written story when I read one, and Bob’s stories are well-written, indeed. I like his pattern of including “twists”, which I decided to call “saltos”, often he employs more than one. His ability to describe actions is great, it can make a situation in his text almost palpable!
I hope his stories will be read by lots of people to give him the success he deserves.

Bob has an excellent imagination and even better talent expressing it. Love his stories!
It had been a while since I watched people urge forward in their seats hungry for the next word. I did not know him yet but I recognized a professional speaker when I saw -and- heard one. Beyond the clarity of voice, Bob engages his audience immediately with his vibrant story and charming characters, and he builds that investment of curiosity through his twists and threads to the very end. Then, I got to read “Whatever Lulu Wants” and the charm continued. Bob Clark has a way of wordsmithing stories that neatly ties together the nuances while making plenty of room for surprises along the way and treating the reader to endings one might not fully anticipate.
Mr. Clark is at his best when he writes about life on the U.S./Mexican border. He has a unique talent for revealing intimate and honest details of a life there that most writers barely understand or write about convincingly. Where can I find more of his work?
I am truly amazed by the heartwarming comments. They are (almost) worth more me to me than if people actually purchased the book. Notice that I said “almost.” I think I am blushing now.
Bob’s writing is organic and timeless. Anyone in any circumstance of life can relate to his finely tuned tales. I’ve read some of his works and find myself wanting more. Keep ‘em coming, Bob!
After knowing you all these years,I never knew before that you really were a child at one time!
Good luck
What can I say about Bob I would need to write a book about him. He is a great writer with a great imagination so if you read this you will be very interested. YOu should be the next Edgar Allen Poe what do you think.
Bob Clark knows how to tell a story
Hard edged, yet at its core sentimental. Whatever Lulu Wants is a very engaging story, and Bob really knows how to pull off some surprising twists. Having had the pleasure reading several of Bob’s storys, I would expect no less of him. In my opinion his stories merit a book of their own.
500 Votes!
I really wish that I could give a book to all who made those heartwarming comments, but I am the original starving artist. I lost more than 100 pounds in the last year. Please buy a book. The publisher will buy a hot dog for me if you do.
