An excerpt from “The Trap”, a short story by Rhia Johnson published in volume one of “An Honest Lie: Encouraging the Delinquency of Your Inner Child.”

Every neighborhood has one, the old house that kids warn each other to stay away from, the house that if your ball accidentally goes over the fence, you consider it lost and gone forever. In some neighborhoods there is a vicious dog that lives in the yard, in some the house actually looks abandoned, and in some you get glimpses here and there of its one lonely tenant. In all though, is the unfortunate story of how little Bobby (or whoever) went in but never came out.
Grown-ups gossip dismiss these childish urban legends by saying that the family of little Bobby moved away years ago, but the kids in the neighborhood know what really happened.
