Sarah Freeman (b.1984) became interested in art at an early age. At 15, she won the National PTA award of Excellence for her drawing “Books Can Grab You”. She then turned to oil painting, and in 2001 she began studying with figure painter Jeremy Lipking, who has since been recognized as one of the top figure painters in the country. At age 18, she was accepted into the California Art Club, as the youngest member in the club’s 92-year history. She received 1st place in the Artist’s Magazine Annual Competition, Still Life category, student division, for her oil painting “Bowl with Grapes”. She also was selected by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts as one of the participants for ARTS Week, in which she was among 15 visual artists chosen out of 1500 applicants. During this time, the selected artists were brought to Miami for an all-expenses-paid week of master classes, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary activities. She also exhibited twice in the California Art Club’s Gold Medal Exhibition, a large juried show allowing approximately 150 participants per year. Freeman received the Editor’s Choice Award in the Pastel Journal’s Annual Competition for her pastel drawing “Bowl with Egg”. She has shown in several galleries in California, including Morseburg Galleries and Wendt Gallery. She came to New Mexico to go to St. John’s College, where she studied the classics. She then transferred and recently graduated from the College of Santa Fe, where she learned a variety of new artmaking practices, including printmaking. Freeman currently lives and works in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she teaches private art lessons. This is her first book cover, and she is excited to be branching out into the world of illustration. In addition to making art, she enjoys reading, hiking, and watching cartoons.
